Race #1: The Longest Lap
Meet Point Chatsworth st. West of Tampa 7am.
January 2nd 2011
Spectators: 4
Meat Pylons: 8/2 (second section)
Use the map by clicking on it and holding down to drag it to the meet point.
A one lap race eh? Well it's not the longest (about 11 miles) but on these bikes you will be challenged! There's a fair amount of climbing and some tricky technical descending and even some street riding and braving traffic, just about everything is covered. Since it's only one lap, you won't have time to pace yourself, you'll just have to go and hope you make it! I recommend having some stuff to fix a flat etc because you do go out into the styx a bit and it's a long push back to the start. There are several sections where you can go the wrong way, I will be marking the course the day before but some of the marking may be gone. I will provide a map for each racer so you can find your way out.

As you can see by the map, we start at Tampa and Chatsworth, climb up to Tampa and Sesnon and then head around Porter Ranch where we will take some difficult single track to the bottom of Browns Canyon. Once in browns canyon, you will climb out on the street and hook back up with some fire roads on De Soto, the last leg is part of the start, back to Tampa and Chatsworth. Confused? That's the challenge!

The first part where you could get lost is the corner of Tampa and Sesnon. You cross the street and take the equestrian trail that runs parallel to Sesnon.

Here you want to stay to the right, take the single track to the fire road and climb the fire road, don't follow the trail the follows the houses.

Off the fire road and onto the single track. It's hard to see from the fire road, I will mark the trail.

Down the single track and you cross the fire road into the grove of oak trees, from here bank left onto the tricky decent. Watch your speed!!! you will eat shit and there are sheer drops, so be careful!!
Maps will be provided, you may need them.
Race #2 The Filthy 15.
Spectators: 8
Meat Pylons: 2
Meet point: June 9th 7am @ Starbucks
9935 Topanga Canyon Boulevard
Chatsworth, CA 913113602
Course Description:
This is a cross between a criterion and a bmx race with some climbing thrown in for good measure. The course is mostly comprised of hard pack sandstone and rutts in the semi figure 8 configuration. Riders will have to complete 15 laps, each lap is approximately .4 miles long meaning the total race is about 6 miles long. There are some mild descents, sandy & rutted turns and technical climbs as will as a 2-3 foot jump on the back side to keep things interesting. The middle section will be shared by riders coming and going so watch for collisions. Plan to stand on the pedals most of the race.

Race #3 Wild West Shootout
Meet point: Corriganville park Simi Valley, CA end of Smith Road off Santa Susana pass rd.

Spectators: 9
Meat Pylons: 6

5 laps, 2 1/2 miles each lap. Light climbing, mostly fire roads and wide single track. Cement bowl to traverse, course will be marked we can do a pace lap if people are unsure. Should be a fast course and there are lots of flatish sections. Don't get confused as there are a couple shared sections.
Race #4: The Fruity Loop/Side Hack Shenanigans!
January 23rd 7am
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
6401 Platt Avenue
West Hills CA, 91367
Spectators: 5/10
Meat Pylons: 6
Bring $3.00 for parking!!!
This is most likely the fastest
race of this series. Mostly on light climbs and flat fire roads you m
ay
want to switch up your gearing so you can gain time in the easier sections. The
overall course length is 3.3 miles about, we're doing 3 laps. It starts with a
bit of a climb and then will have some mild descents and flats where you can
really pedal out. The course will be a series of right turns. There is one
faster decent on the back side of the course so make sure your coaster brake is
all ready to keep you on the trail. There is a mild climb on the back side of
the trail after you reach the bottom of the descent. please study the pics below
so you can get a feel for the course, you can make a wrong turn and get off
course, the trail points will be marked just in case.
This is only the qualifying race, the top 10 finishers will have to duke it out on BMX sidehacks. We're going to to ten laps in the dirt parking lot. The teams are broken up as follows: 1st & 10th place, 2nd & 9th place, 3rd & 8th place etc. The team gets the same points. Should be fun....to watch.

We start here with a climb.

Look for these signs as this will keep you on track.

Right turn at the water tankers....

It should be the second right, look for the sign. Don't go straight or you'll wind up in Agoura Hills.

You'll need to take a right here going down, this is the decent so get your brake ready. Right turn at the trashcan after a climb.
Go straight, back up the hill repeat three times.

75% single track with some poorly paved sections. Slight uphill on first half of the course and then undulating single track on the way back. The back side single track is very narrow so pass with care. Each lap is about 1 1/4 miles long, we'll be doing ten laps. There are a series of jumps at the back end so watch out for them. I know it's on the 4th so this is the easiest course out of the bunch as we'll most likely be full of bb-q.

Race #2 The Eagle Has Landed
Meet point: Very south end of Reseda Blvd at the top.
July 11th 5 PM
Spectators: 3
Meat Pylons: 7
The entirety of this course is on fire roads. The course has a fair share of accents and descents. Several steep climbs and sweeping curves, most of the course is easy to handle. You'll be taking the dirt road to a gate an d hanging a left towards the hub. Once you climb to the hub you'll take the tail to the upper right to the eagle rock loop. The back side of the eagle rock loop has a tricky decent so be careful, it will dump you back on the dirt fire road then you'll do a 180 and head back towards the hub and return to the start point. The total length is about 7 1/4 miles long.

Course #3 Sewer Sortie
Spectators: 8
Meat Pylons: 3
Meet point : Sunday July 18th 5pm.
Apollo II Model Aircraft Field, San Fernando Valley, Woodley Ave
Drive all the way to the end.

We'll be parking at the model airplane field and then taking a short ride through some single track to get to the start point. Travel light.
Mostly flat, some sandy sections and gravel roads with a tight single track section in the middle of the course, this will be the fastest course in the bunch. You start by going around the perimeter of the course on a dirt road, once you make it 2/3 of the way around you'll dive into a tight single track section. It will be easy to get lost one this section as there are many ways to go, the correct path will be marked but you'll still have to pay attention. Once out of the single track section, you go through the tunnel and make a left on the bike path to complete the loop. Each lap is around 1.25 miles, we'll be doing 10 laps. You may want to have harder gearing, wear gloves and perhaps a long sleeves shirt at the plant matter is tall and will be really dry and scratchy come summer time.

Race #4
Suburban Blight
Meet point 5 pm, July 25th
ALISO CANYON PARK
Between Reseda & Zelzah on Rinaldi
Northridge, CA 91326
Meet at the entrance to the park on Rinaldi, east of Reseda Blvd..

Description: This will be a fast paced loop that we'll do 5 times. Most of the course if fairly flat with a few up hill sections and stream crossings. The first leg is narrow single track that dumps on a wider path where you can go all out to pass people. The trail turn points will be marked by blue chalk as it will be easy to get lost. Most of the single track is nearly overgrown from lack of use, the brush is tall so you will get scraped up a bit. I recommend bigger chain rings (34-42 teeth) for this one as you'll be doing a small amount of climbing and have plenty of opportunity for sprinting. You'll have several stream crossings on the single track section and a few short, steep climbs on the back side of the oval. One section of the single track dumps you back on wide trail, DO NOT TAKE THE WIDE TRAIL, the single track hooks right back, look for the chalk and follow the course. If you get lost and fail to complete all 5 laps correctly, you'll get one point for participating and that's it.

Meat Pylons: 5
Meet point : July 12th, 5pm @ the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
6401 Platt Avenue
West Hills CA, 91367
Course Description:
This is a out and back again style race on fire roads and double track. Most of the course is undulating mild hills in a gradual decent to the valley bottom. At the bottom, you'll make a right and then cross a stream. Once you cross the stream, head right through the sludge pit until you see a brown park sign, make a right up the hill. Follow the trial until it rejoins with the main trail and make a left back the way you came. There is a fair amount of moderate climbing on this one and the hill on the backside of the course is a doosey for sure. Gear your bike appropriately.

Total course length approximately 6.5 miles.

Coaster Brake Challenge!
Race #1: Hubba Hubba Hubba
Meet at:
Coffee Bean on the
Corner of Ventura and Reseda Blvd. Sunday January 4th @ 7am. 18505 Ventura Blvd.
Tarzana CA, 91356
Race time @ 8:00 am.
Day of race sign ups are fine!
We race rain or shine.
This race will be partially on the street and the majority on fire roads. We will start at the bottom of Reseda Blvd and climb to the very top. Once at the top you'll make a right and continue up the fire road for a ways until you see a yellow gate on the left. Go past t his gate towards the Hub Junction (1.9 Miles) once you get to the hub you just turn around and began your decent. Most of this race is climbing with some moderate descents so make sure your coaster brake works well, you'll need it! Gear your bikes for climbing as that will make your brake you as there are only a few flats on this course you are mainly going up or going down. First one to complete the course wins. Should take around an hour tops.
We
will start the race here...

Up, Up and away! Past this gate and make a right at the top.

Up a ways and there will be a fork in the road, you'll want to go past the gate on the left.

Hub Junction is 1.9 miles from this point making the whole race around 6 miles round trip.

Once you see this you can turn around and began your decent!
Race #2 Nature Walk Through Hell.
Meet point 7AM January 11th.
Starbucks
18100 Chatsworth St.
Granada Hills, CA 91344
This is a 50/50 race. 1/2 paved and 1/2 dirt. There will be a few spots where you'll have to cyclocross it across roads and up sections that are too steep for a bike. Each lap is about 3 miles long & should take 30-45 minutes to complete, we'll do three laps. There are a few technical, steep but very short accents and a couple mildly technical, steep but very short descents on the trail. Once you get to the top of the trail head, you'll have to ride the street down to the corner of Tampa & Chatsworth and make a right, that will complete the loop. Most of the trail is mild climbing, but is deceptively difficult as you will see when you run it. See below photos for more information. You don't need a camera for this race.

We start here... Take the trail to the left here...

Go under the 118 fwy and up this little hill. The hill is too steep for you to bike up, you'll have to carry your ride...

You have to cross the street and pass through this gate, beware motorists, walkers, dogs etc.

Up through the burnt out trees...

There are two paths here, take the higher ground to the right that runs along the road.

The porter ranch sign is the end of the trail head, then down Tampa to the beginning. It's down hill so you can catch your breath. Repeat three times.

Race #4 The Wasteland.
Meet at: Starbucks 7am Jan 25th.
11850
Balboa Boulevard
Granada Hills, CA 91344
This is the last race in the series and it is different than what you're used to so please read the following carefully so you can do your best.

Each of the points on the map there will be a bucket with some playing cards in them, you need to go to each point and get a card out of the bucket. The first one to get back to the starting point with all five cards is the winner. You can do this in any order you wish, some cards are easier to get than others so you'll have to just figure it out for yourself. This should be a short race, more of a sprint or alley cat but on dirt and unkept roads.

Behold the Wasteland.

Looping course with a combination of fire road and single track, total length is around 3/4 of a mile and we will be doing 8 laps. A few features to be wary of are on the first leg of single track there is a sink hole that you'll need to be watch out for. Also there is a small but steep and technical climb that you'll have to ride or run up each time, the rest is easy, buttery single track through a bunch of trees. After the hill, go past the fence and hang a right. There are several parallel paths on the back side of this course that do join together, be wary of merging riders. Should be relatively bike and ped free on the back side free but will have peds and dogs on the starting leg, watch your calves.
Race #2 The Humpty Hump
Meet point:
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on the South West corner of Reseda & Ventura Blvd Jan 10th 7:00 AM
Spectators: 3
Meat Pylons: 5
We are going to race from the top of Reseda Blvd to the end of Dirt Mulholland at Topanga Canyon. Once you hit the pavement, you'll turn around. There's a gate about 2/3 of the way through that you'll have to go around. The course is fire road and is a series of undulating hills so you'll be descending and climbing most of the time. The total length is about 7 miles long.
Race #3 Nature Walk Through Hell.

Each lap is about 2 miles long & should take 20-30 minutes to complete, we'll do five laps. There are a few technical, steep but very short accents and a couple mildly technical, steep but very short descents on the trail. There are a couple spots where you go down and come right back up again, this course involves the most bike handling skills out of the set. You'll have to watch your downhill speed as the trail runs adjacent to a stream bed and falling 5 feet or so onto some rocks will really suck. You can build up some serious speed down hill and then have to make a hard left next to a stream or fall off into the rocks. There's also a low lying tree over the trail at one point so you'll need to duck or you'll knock yourself out. Once you get to the top of the trail head on Sesnon, then you'll make a left on the single track adjacent to the sidewalk and go back down the trail until you join back up with the main trail. Once you get to the start you'll climb the paved hill and then take the single track to the right. This completes a lap. You'll be sharing the course with all the other racers going up and coming down, so pay attention. Don't get off the trial at any time, if you do this means you're not on track. Most of the trail is mild climbing, and some tricky descending, but is deceptively difficult as you will see when you run it.
Race #4: The Fruity Loop
Jan 24th 7am
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
6401 Platt Avenue
West Hills CA, 91367
This is a two-part elimination race. The first race is for everyone detailed below. The second race will be held in the dirt parking lot where we're parked. The top 10 finishers will have to do 10 laps in a dirt oval on a 16" child's bike (provided). This will determine the winner for race four, so make the elimination race and decide the standing in the lot. So stick around once you complete the first race for the final battle for coaster brake supremacy!
